Anxiety is one of the most common behavioral problems in domestic dogs, affecting an estimated 14–72% of dogs to varying degrees. Common Types and Causes of Dog Anxiety
Separation anxiety is the most frequently diagnosed type, where dogs become distressed when left alone or separated from their primary attachment figure. Noise phobia — intense fear of thunderstorms, fireworks, or loud sounds — is another extremely prevalent form. Situational anxiety arises from specific triggers: vet visits, car rides, unfamiliar people, or new environments. Social anxiety, often stemming from inadequate puppy socialization, causes fear responses to strangers or other animals.
Generalized anxiety disorder can occur in dogs without obvious situational triggers and has a significant genetic component, being particularly common in German Shepherds, Border Collies, Vizslas, and Labrador Retrievers. Age-related cognitive dysfunction in senior dogs can also produce anxiety-like signs. Recognizing Anxiety Signs in Dogs
Anxiety signs range from subtle to unmistakable. Mild signs include yawning, lip licking, excessive blinking, and looking away (calming signals). Puzzle feeders and enrichment activities provide mental stimulation. Medication Options for Dog Anxiety
When behavioral approaches alone are insufficient — particularly in moderate-to-severe cases — veterinary-prescribed medication can be transformative. The FDA has approved two medications specifically for canine separation anxiety: fluoxetine (Reconcile) and clomipramine (Clomicalm). Both increase serotonin availability and are intended as long-term medications used alongside behavioral modification, not as standalone cures.
Situational anxieties (storms, vet visits, travel) are often addressed with fast-acting medications used as needed. Trazodone has gained popularity for this purpose due to its safety profile.
