What Is Cat Panleukopenia?
Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a parvovirus that infects and kills rapidly dividing cells in the body. It primarily attacks cells in the intestinal lining, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissue — destroying the cat’s ability to fight infection and causing severe gastrointestinal disease simultaneously. The name “panleukopenia” refers to the dramatic drop in white blood cells (leukopenia) the virus causes.
The virus is closely related to canine parvovirus and mink enteritis virus, but it does not infect dogs or humans. FPV is extraordinarily hardy — it can survive in the environment for months to years, resisting most common household disinfectants. This environmental stability makes it especially dangerous in shelters, breeding facilities, and any setting where multiple cats have been.
Symptoms & Signs
Symptoms typically appear 2–10 days after exposure. The disease progresses rapidly, especially in kittens, and can be fatal within 24–48 hours of severe symptom onset if untreated.
- Sudden, severe lethargy
- High fever (often 104–107°F / 40–41.7°C)
- Vomiting — may be bloody
- Diarrhea — profuse, watery, or bloody
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration
- Nasal discharge
- Hunching over the water bowl without drinking
In very young kittens infected in utero or shortly after birth, panleukopenia can cause cerebellar hypoplasia — a condition where part of the brain fails to develop properly, resulting in permanent wobbliness and coordination issues (feline cerebellar ataxia). These kittens are often called “wobbly cats” and can live happy lives despite the neurological signs, though they require special care.

How Cat Panleukopenia Spreads
FPV spreads through direct contact with an infected cat’s bodily fluids (urine, feces, blood, vomit, nasal secretions) or through contaminated objects and environments (bedding, food bowls, litter boxes, hands, clothing). Fleas can also carry the virus between cats.
The virus is incredibly resistant to environmental destruction. It can survive on surfaces for up to one year and is resistant to many standard disinfectants. The only reliably effective household disinfectant is diluted bleach (1:32 ratio, or 1/2 cup bleach per gallon of water), left in contact with the surface for 10 minutes. This is critical information for decontaminating a space after an infected cat has been present.
Treatment Options
There is no antiviral cure for panleukopenia. Treatment is entirely supportive and aims to keep the cat alive while the immune system mounts a response. Hospitalization is almost always required for infected kittens. Treatment may include:
- IV or subcutaneous fluids — to combat dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea
- Antibiotics — to prevent secondary bacterial infections (the destroyed white blood cells can’t fight bacteria)
- Anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medications
- Blood or plasma transfusions — in severe cases of anemia
- Nutritional support — tube feeding if the cat won’t eat
Cats that survive the first 5 days of intensive care have a much better prognosis. Survivors develop strong immunity and are unlikely to be re-infected. The cost of hospitalization and treatment can range from $500 to $3,000+ depending on severity and duration.
Prevention & Vaccination
Vaccination is the most effective and straightforward way to protect cats against panleukopenia. The FPV vaccine is considered a “core” vaccine — meaning it is recommended for all cats regardless of lifestyle. The standard FVRCP vaccine covers three diseases: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia.
Kittens receive a series of FVRCP vaccines starting at 6–8 weeks, given every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks of age. A booster is given at 1 year, then typically every 1–3 years depending on lifestyle risk and the specific vaccine used. The panleukopenia component provides excellent, long-lasting protection.
