Cat pancreatitis is one of the most common and frequently underdiagnosed digestive disorders in cats. Unlike dogs, cats rarely vomit dramatically — instead they often just stop eating and become lethargic, which means owners may not realize how seriously ill their pet is until the condition has progressed. Understanding the warning signs, causes and treatment options can mean the difference between a quick recovery and a life-threatening emergency.
What Is Cat Pancreatitis?
The pancreas is a small but vital organ tucked beside the stomach and small intestine. It performs two critical jobs: producing digestive enzymes that break down food, and secreting hormones — primarily insulin — that regulate blood sugar. Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed, causing its own digestive enzymes to activate prematurely and begin digesting the organ itself.
Feline pancreatitis is classified as either acute (sudden onset) or chronic (ongoing, low-grade inflammation). Chronic pancreatitis is far more common in cats than in dogs and often coexists with inflammatory bowel disease and cholangiohepatitis — a combination vets call ‘triaditis.’ Because all three conditions can occur simultaneously, diagnosing and managing feline pancreatitis requires a thorough workup.
Symptoms of Pancreatitis in Cats
Cats are notorious for hiding illness, and pancreatitis symptoms can be subtle, especially in the chronic form. The most common signs include persistent lethargy and reluctance to move, complete or partial loss of appetite lasting more than 24 hours, weight loss over days or weeks, occasional vomiting, abdominal pain where the cat may hunch its back or resent belly touching, jaundice (yellowing of skin or gums), dehydration, and fever or subnormal temperature.
In severe acute cases, a cat may collapse or show signs of shock. Any cat that stops eating for more than 24 to 48 hours should be seen by a veterinarian — hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) can develop rapidly in anorexic cats.
Causes and Risk Factors
In most cats the underlying cause is never identified — idiopathic cases predominate. Contributing factors include infections such as toxoplasmosis, feline herpesvirus, calicivirus and FIP; inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease (triaditis); physical trauma; certain medications; and obesity or high-fat diets, though the dietary link is weaker in cats than dogs.
Diagnosis and Treatment
No single test definitively diagnoses feline pancreatitis. Vets combine the feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (fPLI) blood test with a complete blood count, biochemistry panel, urinalysis and abdominal ultrasound. Treatment is supportive: IV or subcutaneous fluids, anti-nausea drugs (maropitant, ondansetron), pain relief (buprenorphine), appetite stimulants (mirtazapine), nutritional support via feeding tube if needed, and treatment of concurrent disease. Most cats with mild to moderate pancreatitis recover within a week of appropriate care.
Prevention and Long-Term Management
Because idiopathic pancreatitis is so common, complete prevention is not always possible. Maintain a healthy body weight, feed a balanced diet without excessively high fat content, schedule regular vet check-ups, and treat concurrent conditions like IBD promptly. Cats with chronic pancreatitis often need ongoing prescription GI diets, cobalamin (B12) supplementation, and regular blood tests to monitor enzyme and blood glucose levels. Many cats with chronic pancreatitis enjoy a good quality of life for years with attentive management.
