Canine parvovirus (CPV) is one of the most dangerous and highly contagious viral diseases affecting dogs worldwide. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells—primarily in the intestinal lining and bone marrow—causing severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and immune suppression. Without prompt veterinary intervention, mortality rates can exceed 90%. With aggressive treatment, survival rates reach 70–90%.
The good news: parvovirus is almost entirely preventable through timely vaccination. Understanding how the virus spreads and how to protect your dog can save their life.
How Canine Parvovirus Spreads
CPV-2 is extraordinarily resilient in the environment. The virus can survive indoors for months and outdoors for over a year in the right conditions. It is resistant to most household disinfectants—only bleach (sodium hypochlorite) at a 1:30 dilution reliably inactivates it.
Transmission routes include:
- Direct contact: Nose-to-nose contact with an infected dog’s faeces, saliva, or vomit.
- Indirect contact: Contaminated soil, shoes, clothing, food bowls, leashes, or kennels.
- Fomites: You can bring the virus home on your shoes without knowing any sick dog was nearby.
Susceptible dogs include unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated puppies (6 weeks to 6 months are highest risk), immunocompromised adults, and certain high-risk breeds: Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, American Pit Bull Terriers, English Springer Spaniels, and German Shepherd Dogs appear to have greater susceptibility.
Recognising Parvovirus Symptoms
Symptoms typically appear 3–7 days after exposure. Early signs are subtle; the disease accelerates rapidly:
- Lethargy and loss of appetite — often the first signs
- Fever (or subnormal temperature in severe cases)
- Vomiting — profuse and persistent
- Bloody diarrhoea — characteristically foul-smelling and haemorrhagic
- Abdominal pain and bloating
- Dehydration — progresses rapidly due to fluid losses
If you suspect parvovirus, isolate your dog immediately and call your vet. Do not wait to see if symptoms resolve—the disease moves quickly.
Vaccination: The Most Important Prevention Tool
The core parvovirus vaccine is one of the safest and most effective vaccines in veterinary medicine. The standard puppy vaccination protocol:
- 6 weeks: First vaccine given at the breeder or shelter (often a maternal antibody window)
- 8 weeks: First vet-administered dose (or primary dose if not previously vaccinated)
- 12 weeks: Second dose
- 16 weeks: Third dose — this is critical; maternal antibodies must be gone for the vaccine to fully work
- 12–16 months: Booster after the puppy series
- Every 1–3 years: Adult boosters based on titer testing or vet recommendation
The puppy immunity window (4–8 weeks) is a vulnerable period when maternal antibody levels may be too low to protect but high enough to block the vaccine. This is why the series extends to 16 weeks—to ensure at least one dose ‘takes’ fully.
Environmental Decontamination
If a parvo case has occurred in your home or yard, thorough decontamination is essential before bringing in a new unvaccinated puppy:
- Clean all surfaces with a 1:30 dilution of household bleach and water (1 part bleach to 30 parts water)
- Wash all fabrics, bedding, and soft toys in hot water with bleach if safe for the material
- Discard porous items (rope toys, worn collars) that cannot be reliably disinfected
- Outdoor soil areas cannot be fully decontaminated — restrict access for unvaccinated dogs for at least 1 year
Treatment If Infection Occurs
There is no antiviral drug that kills parvovirus. Treatment is aggressive supportive care:
- IV fluid therapy to replace losses and correct electrolyte imbalances
- Anti-nausea medications (maropitant, ondansetron)
- Antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections through the damaged gut wall
- Nutritional support — early feeding through a nasoesophageal tube improves outcomes
- Hospitalisation in an isolation ward for 5–7 days on average
Outpatient protocols exist for mild cases in resource-limited settings but carry higher risk. The sooner a puppy is admitted, the better the prognosis.
