  • Status epilepticus: A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, OR two or more seizures without full recovery in between — emergency vet immediately
  • Cluster seizures: Multiple seizures in 24 hours — emergency vet care required
  • First-ever seizure: Always warrants same-day veterinary evaluation

Causes of Epilepsy in Dogs

The cause depends on the type of epilepsy. Idiopathic epilepsy has a strong genetic component in many breeds, including Border Collies, Belgian Tervurens, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Australian Shepherds. Living with an Epileptic Dog

  • Keep a seizure diary: Record date, time, duration, description, and potential triggers for every seizure. Share with your vet at appointments.
  • Seizure first aid: Stay calm, move hazardous objects away, do NOT put anything in the dog’s mouth (they cannot swallow their tongue), time the seizure, keep the room quiet and dimly lit, stay with your dog through the post-ictal phase.
  • Medication consistency: Give AEDs at the same time every day. Missing doses can trigger breakthrough seizures. Never abruptly stop phenobarbital.
  • Regular monitoring: Phenobarbital requires blood level checks and liver function tests every 6 months.
